I am Mrs. Ortega, the Art teacher at Main Avenue Elementary School. Our visual arts enrichment program provides instruction to kindergarten through sixth grade students. Art lessons cover the elements and principles of art and design, explore well-known and maybe not so well-known artists, art history and multi-cultural art forms. The goal of the art lessons is to integrate grade level curriculum and Common Core standards, as well. Student creativity and problem solving are highly encouraged during art class.
Students discover and learn to implement the Elements and Principles of Art and Design into their artwork, learning both vocabulary and skills for each element and principle. Students are given opportunities to practice speaking, listening and writing as they create and evaluate art, providing evidence and examples to support their thoughts when looking at and interpreting art.
Art instruction is provided weekly for 40 minutes to every student in grades TK-6.
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
